Why use an Arthur Brick Press to produce bricks?

  • The machine is economical both to produce the bricks and the cost of purchasing the machines
  • The bricks are of predictable quality, size and compressive strength
  • The machine is robust and constructed using modern production techniques
  • It is South African developed and manufactured

Bricks that are being manufactured on this site are made using a 10% cement mixture which, after curing will produce a brick ± 7 MPa. This is absolutely adequate for single storey building. Using a higher % in the mix the resulting brick can comfortably achieve a 12-15 MPa compressive strength in accordance with the SABS 1215:2008 specification.

This picture shows a cured brick which has cured to a pretty pink colour due to the natural oxides in the soil. The other bricks in this picture are freshly made and uncured

These bricks have been cured for 3 weeks which is more than necessary to commence construction. Bricks can be used after 10 – 12 days.

As can be seen the brick undergoes a significant colour change in the curing process without any significant shrinkage due to the efficient compression achieved by the Arthur Brick Press. The edges of the bricks are clearly defined.

The final brick colour is influenced by the oxides occurring naturally in the earth used for the bricks. The brick colour can be changed by adding oxide colouring.

The Arthur Brick Press was developed to create a method to allow small scale production of compressed bricks in an efficient manner without the use of electricity or engines to power production.

The bricks can be manufactured and  used on farms, small holdings, townships, rural villages or anywhere cost effective bricks are needed. Quite simply cheap bricks!

Specification

The bricks produced are denser and stronger than hand packed block moulds. The Arthur Brick Press uses the principle of mechanical compression in making of the bricks from a number of raw materials.

The mechanical efficiency results in the following

  • Nominal compaction force 6- 12 tonnes
  • Nominal compaction pressure 1.05 – 2.1.N/mm² (150 – 300 p.s.i.)
  • Compression ratio 1.6:1

The advantage is a consistent brick with constant dimensions and densities.

The finished product will however  be influenced by the following

  • The quality of raw material (soil, cement etc)
  • The strength and durability of the finished product will be influenced by soil quality the cement constituents
  • The Arthur Brick Press will enable the user to produce more uniform products with better quality and predictable finishes
  • To achieve higher production rates
  • To simplify or eliminate tiring operations

Productions volumes can be expected to be up to 300 per day with 2 operators however this volume can increase to 500 with 4-5 operators.

BRICK DIMENSIONS

Brick size is 300mm x 150mm x 108mm high

The number of bricks used for 1m2 of exterior walling is approximately 32. Therefore production of 300 maxi bricks would result in 9 m2 of exterior walling per day. Interior walls would use the maxi brick laid on edge resulting in a much greater coverage for the daily production.
